Nick Kyrgios settles legal case with Wimbledon fan he accused of being ‘drunk out of her mind,’ her lawyers say
The tennis star settled a dispute with a Wimbledon fan who accused him of being ‘drunk out of his mind’ after a heated match and then allegedly assaulted her at the tournament.
Kyrgios’ attorney Michelle O’Hanlon said she received a legal call on her cell phone from the woman, identified only as Jane Doe, around 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
Her lawyer said the caller didn’t know whether to call the police or the tennis player in the matter, and that she then asked him if she could call O’Hanlon back. She was able to do so in a matter of minutes.
O’Hanlon said Wednesday’s settlement between the two involves Kyrgios paying $1,500 in damages as well as paying for Jane Doe to speak with an attorney she met through a program called “Free the Slugs” that lets people speak with lawyers free of charge.
“The goal of this program is to give people who are victims of abuse in any form a voice that they otherwise wouldn’t have,” O’Hanlon said. “This is about empowering her to get help and feel safe to voice her concerns.”
Court documents show the woman was so upset she took her cell phone and called her brother, a professional basketball player, in the middle of the night to tell him she was going to report Kyrgios for threatening her at the Wimbledon semifinals.
She says the man who was playing in the semifinals then followed her to get her phone number so he can report a crime.
The woman then filed a police report with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, but the case was dropped after the tennis star failed to appear at a court date.
She then told a public service program about what happened but she said the case wasn’t resolved until she met with O’Hanlon and filed her suit.
