Jonah Goldberg: Will the GOP finally do something about its Trump problem?
The right-wing has a deep problem, and I’ve written about them before. The problem is the Republican party, which isn’t doing what it needs to do to attract and keep conservatives. So the right wing, with the help of the Trump administration, has gone off the deep end.
But I don’t think that the problem is Trump. I think the problem is that conservatives are a disorganized, demoralized, dispirited group, and without a coherent leader. At the same time, there are many, myself included, who are sick to death of the Trump presidency, and who are ready to write him off as failed.
All right, maybe not that sick to death. But for the moment, let’s ignore the self-destructive elements of Trump’s presidency and focus on the things that are genuinely conservative.
The three main areas I think conservatives need to rally around to defeat Trump are:
1) The Supreme Court: Trump has, in the last two weeks, nominated two Supreme Court justices who are the most conservative justices Donald Trump has ever nominated — Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch.
We can’t ignore that, so we should do something about it.
2) Foreign policy: During the Trump administration, we’ve seen Trump’s embrace of far-right allies, like Benito Guterres, Rex Tillerson and Nikki Haley. He has pushed a radical agenda on the world stage, threatening our allies, and attacking America’s closest allies.
We can’t ignore that either. We can’t just stand by and watch. So we should do something to stop it.
3) Defense spending: Donald Trump has proposed deep defense cuts, which would make America less safe, both militarily and economically. To make matters worse, Trump has proposed to raise America’s debt ceiling in order to fund his disastrous administration. That will leave us a major military deficit. We can’t ignore that either.
We can’t just stand by and watch either. So we should do something to stop it.
Let’s take stock.
First, we need to defend the Supreme Court. In the case of Brett Kavanaugh, the far left has already won, but we know Kavanaugh is
