Can Balenciaga Break With Kanye?
Balenciaga is in trouble.
Its chief creative officer, Massimiliano Giorgetti, is leaving the company after less than three years on the job. The announcement will send shock waves through the fashion world since Balenciaga is arguably one of the fashion houses on best-seller lists.
It was under Giorgetti that the brand began to take shape under creative director Stefano Gabbana.
The designer will also step down; his time at Balenciaga is over.
It all has to do with the design of the brand’s spring 2018 menswear collection.
The clothing is not only about what is on the runway, but also the designer’s personal vision of how to wear it.
How did a brand known for the use of gold and platinum jewelry not see what was happening on the catwalk?
There’s just one way to find out.
Enter Balenciaga’s new director of men’s fashion, Nicolas Peskow.
Peskow has been the creative director of the brand for two years, and this is the first time he has been given the task of bringing a collection to the runway.
In an announcement posted on Instagram, Peskow said, “I am very happy to announce that I will be taking over the leadership of the brand in February. I have always had my heart set on this challenge and it is a responsibility that I embrace with all my heart.”
In his debut as Balenciaga director, Peskow said: “This is an historic moment for the Balenciaga brand and for the menswear and contemporary fashion industry at large, reflecting an extraordinary creative vision, a passion for fashion and commitment to excellence, a global vision and a truly global brand—a company that is one with its customers and consumers around the world.
“Balenciaga is a brand that has been able to build up a strong reputation in a very short period of time, and it is a company that has taken on board the feedback and comments from all the critics, all the fans and has become a strong ally in the fashion industry. I’m very honored, and I’m very proud to be part of such an international and global brand.”
